Generator Maintenance Plan Renewals: Keeping Customers Year After Year
Selling a maintenance plan once is good. Keeping that customer on the plan for ten years is what builds the business. Renewals are where the value of a plan book really shows up, and they are also where a lot of plans quietly fall apart. The customer forgets, the visit slips, the card expires, and one year nobody notices the plan is gone. The fix is mostly about making the plan run so smoothly that renewing is the default.
Every Visit Is a Renewal
Add-ons like the ones in Surge Protector Add-Ons: Offering Whole-House Surge Protection From the Inspection make each visit more valuable. Renewals are about making sure the visits keep happening at all.
In ElectricalBossPro, a plan is a recurring service on the property with a minimum of 365 days between visits. When a visit is completed, the count starts again, and the next visit comes due on its own on the Waiting List a year later. There is no separate renewal step to remember. As long as the plan is on the property, it keeps coming back.
That means the real renewal question is not “did they sign again?” It is “did the visit happen, and was the customer happy with it?”
Show Up on Time
The surest way to lose a plan customer is to forget them. A yearly visit that turns into an eighteen-month visit tells the customer the plan is not worth much. The Waiting List keeps that from happening by coloring visits due now and overdue past a 7-day grace, so the office can see who is waiting.
A weekly look at the map, with overdue visits scheduled first, keeps the plan promise. Customers notice when your van shows up around the same time every year without them having to call.
Remind Them Before You Come
Customers who know you are coming are customers who feel looked after. Automated reminders by text and email give them a night-before reminder, a heads-up when they are next and a text when the tech arrives, if they chose those alerts. For a plan visit, the office can also send a personal two-way text when the visit comes due, asking for a good day.
Those small touches matter more for renewals than any single discount or promotion. They remind the customer that the plan is active and that your company is keeping track of it for them.
Give Them Something to Keep
The printed Electrical Safety Inspection report is the plan's proof of value. Each year, the homeowner gets a report with the checklist, readings, condition and recommendations. Over several years, they have a stack of reports showing someone has been watching their house.
Customers who can see the value renew. Customers who cannot, cancel. If your generator plan does not include an inspection report, consider at least a short note on the invoice or a text after the visit summarizing what was done. Pairing the generator visit with a full safety inspection is covered in Pairing Generator Maintenance With a Safety Inspection in One Yearly Visit.
Keep the Card Current
Many plans that lapse do so for a boring reason: the card on file expired. When a charge does not go through, the invoice stays open and past-due follow-up takes over. Customers can update their card and pay in the customer app, and the office can send a short text to let them know.
Telling customers up front that they can update their card in the customer app any time saves a lot of these from turning into lapsed plans.
Changing the Price
Costs go up, and plan prices sometimes need to as well. When you change a plan price on your service list, let existing plan customers know before the next visit, by text or email from the office. A short, honest note is enough: “Starting next year, our yearly generator plan will be $199. Thanks for being with us.”
Surprises on an invoice are what make customers cancel. A heads-up keeps the relationship intact.
When a Customer Cancels
Some customers will cancel. They sell the house, the generator is removed, or they just decide not to continue. When that happens, take the plan off the property so the visit stops coming due. Keep the client and the equipment on record. If they buy another house, or the next owner calls, you still have the history.
It is also worth a short, friendly question: “Is there anything we could have done better?” The answers often tell you what to fix for every other plan customer.
Renewals are mostly the result of doing the basics well every year. For how renewals fit with records, the Waiting List and billing, visit the ElectricalBossPro generator maintenance software page.
