Pairing Generator Maintenance With a Safety Inspection in One Yearly Visit

A homeowner with a whole-house generator is already letting your tech into the yard once a year. The panel the generator ties into is a few steps away. Pairing the yearly generator visit with a full electrical safety inspection turns one trip into a bigger, more valuable visit, and gives the homeowner a single report that covers both their backup power and the rest of the house.

One Trip Instead of Two

Multi-location accounts, covered in Maintenance Plans for Property Managers: Many Addresses, One Monthly Statement, are one place where pairing visits saves a lot of driving. It works just as well for a single home.

Separate plans for the generator and the inspection mean two visits a year, two reminders, two days the customer has to plan around. A paired plan means one. For the customer, that is simpler. For your company, it is one drive instead of two and a longer, better-paying stop.

Setting Up the Paired Plan

In ElectricalBossPro, a plan is a service on your service list with a price and a minimum number of days between visits. A paired plan can be set up as its own service:

Some shops prefer to keep the two as separate services on the same visit, so the invoice shows each line on its own. Either works. Whatever you choose, put it on the property with 365 days between visits, and the visit comes due on its own on the Waiting List.

If you are offering this to customers who already have a generator plan, a short text or email from the office explaining the upgrade is usually enough. Customers can also sign up for the paired plan in the customer app if you choose to offer it there.

One Checklist Covers Both

The ElectricalBossPro safety inspection checklist already includes a line for generator / transfer switch tested, alongside the main panel, breakers, AFCI and GFCI devices, grounding and bonding, surge protection, connections, outlets and switches, smoke and CO detectors, exterior outlets, the meter base and service drop, and any EV charger.

On a paired visit, the tech does the generator work your company includes in the plan and works the full checklist on the phone. Readings, condition and recommendations go in the same inspection. The generator, transfer switch and panel are all on the job card from the house record, so the tech has the whole setup in front of them.

The software records the visit. Your tech decides how to do the work.

One Report the Homeowner Keeps

After a paired visit, the office prints the Electrical Safety Inspection report with the full checklist, including the generator line, plus readings, condition and recommendations. The homeowner gets one document that covers their generator and their house.

That single report is a strong reason to renew. It shows a lot of value from one visit, and it reads as a complete picture rather than a single item checked off. More on the report in The Printed Electrical Safety Inspection Report: The Deliverable the Homeowner Keeps.

One Charge

When the tech taps Complete, the invoice is created with the paired plan, or both services as separate lines, plus any extra items the customer asked for. The card on file can be charged automatically. The customer gets one invoice in the customer app for the whole visit.

Recommended work that needs a price, like a whole-house surge protector or replacement outlets, goes on an estimate built from your service list. The customer approves it online, and the approved estimate becomes a scheduled job.

Scheduling Paired Visits

Paired visits take longer than a generator-only visit, so plan the day accordingly. On the dispatch board, give the generator van fewer stops on paired days, or mix paired visits with shorter ones. Auto-route orders the day Closest First or Furthest First from the shop.

The customer gets the same reminders as any other visit: night before, when they are next and when the tech arrives, if they chose them.

Who It Suits

A paired plan suits most generator owners, especially those in older homes, those with an EV charger or a lot of electronics, and those who like the idea of one yearly check for everything electrical. It is also a natural offer at the generator install, right on the install estimate.

For customers who only want the generator visit, keep the generator-only plan too. Offering both gives each customer a clear choice. For how paired plans fit with records, the Waiting List and billing, visit the ElectricalBossPro generator maintenance software page.
