Recording Voltage, Load and IR Scan Readings in the Electrician App

Readings are the part of an inspection that most often ends up on the back of a work order, a sticky note or nowhere at all. The tech takes them, sees nothing alarming, and moves on. A year later, at the same house, nobody can say what last year's numbers were. That is a missed chance to show the homeowner what you actually measured.

Readings Sit Under the Checklist

The checklist items are covered in The Safety Inspection Checklist in the Electrician App, Item by Item. Right below them on the same screen are the readings fields.

The tech fills them in on the phone as they work, and they save with the job. No separate form, no transcribing later in the van. When the inspection is done, the readings are already in the office.

The Readings Fields

The tech app has a field for each reading a residential safety inspection usually records:

Fill in what applies to the job. If a tech does not take a particular reading on a particular house, the field stays blank. The app does not grade the numbers or tell anyone what they mean. That judgment belongs to your electrician.

Panel age is worth a word. It often comes straight from the equipment saved on the house, where the main panel shows its year installed. If the house record says 2008, the tech can confirm it rather than guess. If the record is blank, the tech's best information goes into the inspection and can be copied back to the house so the next visit starts with it. The readings and the house record keep each other honest.

Why the Same Fields Every Time Matters

When every tech records the same readings in the same places, three things get easier.

First, year-over-year comparison. Next year's inspection at the same house can be read against this year's. If the hottest spot on the IR scan or the measured load looks different from last time, your tech has something to look into and something to talk about with the homeowner.

Second, consistency across the crew. A homeowner who had one tech last year and a different tech this year gets the same kind of record. Your inspection service looks like one service, not two people's habits.

Third, the report. The office prints an Electrical Safety Inspection report for the homeowner from what the tech entered. Clean, consistent readings make a clean, consistent report.

Issues Found: Write It So the Office Understands

The “issues found” field is free text, and it is where the tech captures anything worth flagging. Keep it short and specific. “Warm breaker on IR scan, upstairs bedroom circuit” or “Exterior outlet cover cracked, back patio” tells the office exactly what to follow up on.

The issues found field is for the record. The condition and recommendations, covered in Condition and Recommendations: Turning the Tech's Findings Into a Report the Homeowner Reads, are where the tech turns those issues into plain-language advice the homeowner can act on.

Photos Back Up the Numbers

A reading is more convincing with a picture behind it. Techs who use an IR camera can take a photo of the thermal image or the meter display with the phone, and before-and-after photos taken in the app attach to the same job. Next to a written hot spot, a photo of what the tech saw makes the conversation with the homeowner much simpler.

Photos of the panel label, the generator nameplate or the EV charger's data plate also help the office fill in the equipment record on the house, which makes the next inspection start with better information.

Entering Readings Without Slowing Down

Nobody wants to stand in a hot garage typing on a phone. A few habits keep it quick:

The whole readings section takes a few minutes once the tech is used to it. Those minutes turn into a record the homeowner can read and your next tech can build on. To see readings with the rest of the tech's tools, visit the ElectricalBossPro electrician app page.
