Recording Inspection Readings: Voltage, Main Breaker Amps, Load and the Hottest Spot

Checkmarks tell the homeowner what was looked at. Readings tell them what the tech actually measured. A safety inspection report with real numbers on it reads very differently from one that is all boxes, and the numbers are just as useful to your own team next year as they are to the customer today. ElectricalBossPro gives readings their own place on the inspection.

Readings Sit Below the Checklist

The checklist itself, from the main panel to the EV charger, is covered in The Electrical Safety Inspection Checklist on the Tech's Phone. Below it on the same screen, the tech has fields for the readings taken during the visit.

The software does not tell the tech what to measure or how. It gives them a consistent place to write it down, so every inspection captures the same kinds of numbers in the same spots.

The Reading Fields

The safety inspection in ElectricalBossPro has fields for:

Not every inspection will fill every field. If your company does not do IR scans on a basic plan, that field stays empty. If the tech only takes some readings, they record those. The point is a consistent place for the numbers you do take.

It is worth agreeing as a team on which readings are part of every plan visit and which are extras. If the yearly plan description promises certain readings on the report, every tech should take them every time. If a premium plan includes an IR scan, the field gives that work a visible place on the report, which makes the premium plan easier to explain to the next customer.

Why Write the Numbers Down

Plenty of techs take readings during an inspection and never write them down. They look, they decide, they move on. That works for the visit, but it throws away information that is useful later.

A reading on the job is there next year. When the tech returns for the next yearly visit, past notes on the card show what was found before. The office can open last year's inspection and see the numbers side by side with this year's. Changes from year to year are something your tech can interpret and explain to the customer. The software just keeps the history.

Readings also make the job more defensible if a customer has a question later. “Here is what we measured on that date” is a better conversation than “I think it was fine.”

The Hottest Spot and Issues Found

Two of the fields tend to carry the most weight on a report. The hottest spot from an IR scan lets the tech note where and what they saw, in their own words. The issues found field is free text for anything the tech wants called out, from a missing cover plate to a breaker that is not labeled.

A photo helps both. A photo of the spot in question, or of the IR camera's screen, can be taken in the tech app and saved with the job. The written note says what it is, and the photo shows it. Together they give the office everything it needs to explain the finding to the homeowner, or to build an estimate for the fix.

From Readings to the Report

When the office prints the Electrical Safety Inspection report, the readings are on it along with the checklist, the condition and the recommendations. Homeowners are not expected to interpret voltage readings on their own. The numbers show that real measurements were taken, and the tech's condition and recommendations explain what they mean in plain language.

That combination, numbers plus a plain explanation, is what makes a yearly report feel like something worth paying for. More on the report itself is in The Printed Electrical Safety Inspection Report: The Deliverable the Homeowner Keeps.

Readings on Generator Visits

If a house has a generator and the inspection includes “generator / transfer switch tested,” the readings and notes from that test can go in the same inspection. Because the generator is saved on the house with its brand, model, kW and fuel, the reading is attached to a known piece of equipment. Next year, the tech knows exactly which generator last year's notes were about.

Over time, a house on a yearly plan builds a record that no single visit could: what was there, what was measured and what was recommended, year after year. That record belongs to the customer's property in your system, so any tech on any van can pick it up.
