Yearly Generator Maintenance Plans as Steady Work for an Electrical Company

A whole-house generator is the kind of equipment homeowners buy hoping they'll rarely need it. When the power does go out, they want it to start. That makes yearly maintenance an easy conversation. It also makes every generator customer a candidate for a visit that comes back every year.

The Most Natural Plan to Sell

The general approach to plans is in Growing Maintenance Plan Revenue in an Electrical Business. Generator maintenance is often the easiest one to start with, because the customer has already decided the equipment matters.

The customer spent real money on the generator. A yearly visit protects that purchase. The pitch almost makes itself: “We'll come out once a year, check it over, and you'll know it's ready.” What the visit includes is your electrician's call, and you price it yourself, such as a $189 generator maintenance visit.

Every Generator Install Is a Plan Customer

The best time to offer a maintenance plan is during the install. The customer is already talking to you about the generator, and adding a yearly visit is a small decision next to the big one. Put the plan on the estimate as an option. If they approve it, the maintenance plan starts the day the install is complete.

When the install job is done, the generator and transfer switch go on the house record with brand, model, serial number, year installed, rating in kW and fuel type, along with location and access notes. Next year's tech walks in knowing exactly what they're there to see.

Generators You Didn't Install

Many homes have generators that another company put in, or that came with the house. Those owners often don't have anyone looking after them. They're a good market for an electrical company that offers yearly maintenance.

Over time, every generator your crew sees ends up on the record, whether you installed it or not.

Signing Up Customers

Customers can sign up for a yearly generator maintenance plan and its pricing directly in the customer app. A sign-up form on your website captures their card, lands in Form Responses, and becomes a client with one click. The office can also set up the plan after a phone call or text.

The plan is set to 365 minimum days between visits. Once it's on the property, nobody has to remember the renewal date.

Visits Come Due on Their Own

When a generator visit comes due, it lands on the Waiting List, a live map and list of everything that is due. Pins are colored not due yet, due now, or overdue past a seven-day grace. The office books generator visits onto the van that handles installs, inspections and generators, often grouping nearby houses into one day.

Many shops like to get generator visits done before the season when outages are most likely in their area. The Waiting List makes it easy to see who's due soon and reach out early.

The Visit and the Record

On the tech app, the job card shows the generator, transfer switch and access notes from the house. The tech can work through the safety inspection checklist, which includes testing the generator and transfer switch, and record notes, readings and before-and-after photos. Anything the tech changes on the equipment flows back to the house.

If something needs repair, the tech notes it and the office turns it into an estimate the customer can approve online.

Billing Runs Itself

With a card on file, the visit is charged when the tech taps Complete, or on a schedule if you prefer. Customers can also pay from the customer app. Past-due follow-up sends reminders for any that don't go through. The plan pays for itself without the office chasing anyone.

Growing the List

Count your generator plan customers each month. Every new install should add one. Every house with a generator your crew visits is a chance for another. Over a few years, generator maintenance can become one of the steadiest parts of the business. Customers with multiple properties, like landlords, are covered in Property Managers and Multi-Location Accounts: Monthly Billing for an Electrical Company.
