Choosing an Electrician Mobile App: What to Check Before You Switch
Every field-service app looks good in a sales video. A clean dashboard, a smiling tech, a map with pins. The real test is what happens on a Tuesday when your tech pulls up to a house with a subpanel in the basement, a generator out back and a homeowner who is not answering the door. Before you switch, it is worth checking a few things that matter specifically to electrical work.
Start With the Tech, Not the Dashboard
Moving off paper is covered in Moving Electricians Off Paper Work Orders and the Group Text. Choosing what to move onto is the step before that.
Owners usually evaluate software from the office chair. Do the opposite. Hand a phone to your most skeptical tech and ask them to run a pretend call. Can they find the next call? Get directions in one tap? See where the panel is? Mark the job done? If your crew will not use it, nothing on the office side matters.
Does It Know About Electrical Equipment?
Generic field-service software gives each job an address and a notes box. Electrical work needs more. Check whether the app can save equipment on the house:
- Main panel and subpanels, meter base and service entrance
- Generator, transfer switch and interlock
- EV charger, surge protector, solar inverter and battery storage
- Brand, model, serial, year installed, rating, phase or fuel, and location for each
Then check whether that equipment shows on the tech's job card, fills in new jobs automatically and updates from the field. Those three details are the difference between an equipment list and an equipment record.
Does It Handle Inspections and Recurring Work?
If you sell yearly safety inspections or generator maintenance, look for:
- A safety inspection checklist on the tech's phone, with readings, a condition and written recommendations.
- A printable inspection report for the homeowner.
- Recurring plans that come due on their own, by minimum days between visits.
- A clear view of who is due, who is overdue and where they are on the map.
If the app treats a yearly inspection like a one-time job you have to remember to re-enter, it will cost you customers over time.
Does the Tech App Cover the Whole Call?
Run through a real call from start to finish and check each step:
- Company login plus a personal PIN for each employee
- Calls in route order from the dispatch board, with auto-routing
- One-tap navigation
- Access notes and past notes on the card
- Start, Skip with a note, and Complete
- Before-and-after photos saved to the job
- Automatic on-the-way and arrived texts
- Invoice created at completion, with the card on file charged
- Time clock and crew GPS
Any gap in that list is something that will end up back on paper or in a phone call.
Does It Work on the Phones You Already Have?
Ask whether your crew needs special devices or an app store download. An app that runs in the browser on iPhone and Android and installs to the home screen is much easier to roll out, especially with personal phones and a mix of devices. Details are in iPhone or Android, No App Store: Putting the Electrician App on Phones Your Techs Already Carry.
What Does the Customer See?
The homeowner's experience is part of the product. Look for a customer app with a live route map, alert choices, service requests, plan sign-ups, card updates, invoices and online payment. For property managers and multi-location clients, check whether they can get one monthly statement covering every address.
Is the Pricing Simple?
The big enterprise platforms often price per user, add modules on top and lock you into long contracts. For a shop with a few vans, look for flat plans where the tech app is included, not sold separately. ElectricalBossPro plans are Start at $59/month, Pro at $89/month and Crew at $199/month, with the tech app on every plan and a 14-day free trial with no credit card.
Also check what happens to your data if you leave, how you get your customer list in (CSV import is the usual answer), and whether you can try it with real calls before you pay.
Try It Before You Decide
The best test is a real one. Click around the live demo, a fully stocked sample electrical company with no signup, then start a trial with a few of your own customers and run one van on it for a week. You will know quickly whether your techs like it. To see the full list of what the ElectricalBossPro tech app does, visit the ElectricalBossPro electrician app page.
